Good microbiological practices shall be adhered to. All personnel directly or indirectly involved in recombinant DNA activity shall be instructed in aseptic techniques and the biology of organisms used in the activity, in order that they shall be aware of potential biohazards. An emergency plan shall describe the procedures to be followed in the event of an accident contaminating personnel or the environment. The principal investigator must ensure that everyone in the laboratory is familiar with both the potential hazards of the work and the emergency plan. All personnel working with a pathogen for which an effective vaccine is available should be immunized. Serological monitoring, when appropriate, shall be provided.
